Convergence
Convergence can be described as the management of the positions of the red, green and blue color spots in your TV. If your TV is out of convergence, you will see colored borders around objects. With convergence adjustment, TV images will not show separate red blue and green lines.
In large screen projection TV, convergence errors are possible especially around the screen corners. Convergence problems with televisions must be adjusted for good picture quality. This is however, a difficult process and must be done with great care, as there is the risk of electric shocks that could turn fatal. It is best left to a professionally qualified engineer. The dynamic convergence of TVs usually affects the screen edges and corners, and it is recommended that during the repair of convergence on a projection TV, the TV be left on for at least an hour before any adjustment is made.
In direct view Sony TV, convergence adjustment provisions are not there for sets that are 27” or smaller. Solving Sony TV convergence problems would usually involve replacing fuses or ICs or soldering connections on the convergence board, preferably by a qualified technician. If you move the rear projection models they may need re-calibration and this will affect the convergence. How to do dynamic convergence on Sony TV? There is a board labeled VM that is velocity modulation near the CRT neck board, which handles dynamic convergence.
Convergence problems with television usually are an issue with the IC, particularly in old CRT rear projection TVs. This occurs with all manufacturers since similar ICs are used. After these parts are replaced, manual convergence has to be done for the problem to be resolved.
In Panasonic TV convergence is near perfect, thanks to the single chip design. There are no separate chips for red, blue and green like we see in other conventional projection TVs. This single chip has millions of mirrors that coordinate with a high speed rotating color wheel.
Generally in rear projection TVs, convergence problems are minimal. The TV can work perfectly for hours before any problem is detected. In the Sony projection TV, convergence is automatic through flash focus. The 51” and 57” Sony wide screen projection TVs have both Manual and Flash Focus Convergence allowing perfect adjustment. Auto convergence in rear projection TVs is also present in many major TV brands like Samsung, JVC etc. with the magic self focus feature. Hitachi TV convergence is also automatically adjusted in its rear projection models.
