Beef Tacos

First you would need to decide what type of tortilla you would want for your taco. You have the option of having corn, flour tortilla, and having soft or crunchy tacos. Let’s focus on corn tortilla for now.  If you don’t have tortillas in your local shop, you can purchase instant corn flour-mix to make your own tortillas.  It is quite simple just follow the instructions on the packet.  Basically all instant tortilla corn flour requires you to add water to the corn flour. Then, mix the dough with your hands for about fifteen minutes. Once it is ready, you can take the dough and make balls about the size of a golf ball. You would then get your tortilla press ready to place the ball of dough into the tortilla press, press down gently to form a flat disk.. You would then need to place this flattened bread onto a hot skillet. Wait 30-40 seconds before you flip it over. Then you wait another 30-40 seconds then take it out of the skillet, and your corn tortilla is ready to be filled.

The steps are almost the same for flour tortilla. You would purchase ready-mix flour, requiring you to add only water. You blend the dough the same way you blend the corn tortilla. To make flour tortilla, you will not need the tortilla press, but a roller pin to flatten out the tortilla into a 7-8 inch circle. After you have made your flour into a flattened circle, you would repeat the same steps as the corn tortilla on the skillet.

When making wheat flour tortillas, some people enjoy spreading margarine on their hot tortilla. The margarine melts quickly and creates a delicious snack, by itself. Although this is not known as a taco, another popular choice is melted cheese onto the corn or flour tortilla. Many people know this as a quesadilla.

To make a crunchy or hard shell taco, you would need a ready tortilla and some cooking oil. You get the corn tortilla and place it into a U-shape before placing it on the hot cooking oil. You let it fry until the tortilla becomes a hard shell, thus the name hard-shelled taco. The U-shape creates the space needed to add your fillings.

These steps might seem a little complicated, or you might not have the required ingredients. If so, you can always purchase a pack of tortilla already made from your supermarket. The only steps you would need is to heat them up either on your microwave or skillet.

Making the taco fillings is the other part of making tortillas. Ground beef is chosen because its more readily available than say, seafood, or ground chicken. First acquire all the ingredients you will need- ground beef, onions, pepper and seasoning ingredients- oregano, paprika, cumin, salt, chili and garlic powders.

  • 1 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon mild smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon hot smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 garlic’s minced
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ cup of water
